Årabrot [NO] + Jaye Jayle (Solo) [US] + Karin Park [SE]

There is a timelessness to the music of Årabrot; just as you think you have pinpointed an
influence or reference point, it will escape your grasp, twisting and turning in unexpected directions, shaping a sound that is truly unique. The last two decades have seen Årabrot shapeshift through multiple iterations; they’ve tried on different shapes and sizes, encompassed different moods and explored the outer reaches of various genres and yet never sounded less than entirely themselves. 2023 heralds the arrival of their tenth album, Of Darkness and Light - a cause for celebration.

Kjetil Nernes has been the core and the constant of Årabrot, and for some time now another heart has beat alongside his in perfect unison. A partner in life, love and music, Karin Park has contributed to Årabrot to varying degrees for ten years, and on Of Darkness and Light her presence is both solidified and amplified. The pair live together in a church in the Swedish village where Karin grew up, designing their own domain within which they nurture their children, their craft and their creative visions.

Of Darkness and Light took a long time to take shape and become a whole. Kjetil’s prolific songwriting ability meant that some songs had been tucked away for years, waiting for the perfect time and environment to bloom. Others were written with more urgency in the months leading up to the album’s recording.

Jaye Jayle:
The project of singer/guitarist Evan Patterson, Jaye Jayle's gritty version of Americana is the foundation for his wide-ranging and gripping experiments. Initially steeped in folk and blues, Jaye Jayle's dusty, haunted sound came into its own on 2016's stripped-down House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out. Patterson added more dimensions to the project's contrasts of the traditional and the cutting edge with the avant-garde production of 2018's No Trail and Other Unholy Paths and 2020's entirely electronic Prisyn. He further honed his gifts as a storyteller and sound-shaper on 2023's Don't Let Your Love Life Get You Down, which combined the rustic and futuristic aspects of Jaye Jayle's music with a heroic dose of heartache.

Patterson returned with new music in 2023, first with January's single "Small Dark Voices," and in July with the fifth Jaye Jayle full-length, Don't Let Your Love Life Get You Down. Created in the wake of Patterson's divorce, it combined the experimental electronics he developed with Chisholm -- who also worked on this album -- with the full-band approach of his pre-Prisyn releases. Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Patrick Shiroishi also contributed to its songs of acceptance, which fused blues and gospel with transporting synths. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi.

Karin Park:
She’s been called the Nico of Scandi-goth and she’s been performing with icons such as Lana Del Rey and David Bowie among others. She expresses herself not only through music but also through fashion and perfumery. But to get a real sense of who Karin Park is you must know where Karin comes from. A chubby child from a christian family who desperately wanted to get away from the narrow minds of the countryside using her only advantage; her unique voice. Being considered an outsider in a small Swedish village and years spent in a Missionary school in Japan made her want for something bigger. By 15 she moved away to find her home in music. After studying at Stockholm Music Conservatory, a Norwegian poet brought her to Norway where she started her pop career. She won a few Grammys, moved to London to write songs and work as a model. But her heart was always in the music. After 5 albums and collabs like ”Tokyo By Night” for Hook’n’Sling and Axwell, Karin returned to the village of her youth, buying the church where she first sang in front of an audience as a child. She turned the church into a combined studio and home together with her husband, front man of the Norwegian rock band Årabrot. We can sense the influence of Scott Walker, Massive Attack and Nico in her most recent work but the style of music is Karin’s way of using different elements to tell her stories. What defines her the most though, is her ability to touch people with who she is and what she stands for.
